What You Need to Know About the New CPD Process
As of August 22nd, 2024, the NOCN is introducing significant changes to the CPCS Renewal Test, moving towards a more modern and comprehensive approach to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for construction professionals. This update is part of a broader initiative to ensure that all construction card schemes align with the Construction Skills Certification Scheme’s (CSCS) goal of incorporating CPD by 2030.
Why the Change?
For over a year, NOCN has collaborated with industry stakeholders to revamp the CPCS renewal process. The new CPD system replaces the traditional Renewal Tests (such as RT17, RT59) with an online, industry-led course. This transformation offers cardholders and employers a more efficient and beneficial way to renew CPCS Cards.
Understanding the New CPCS CPD
The CPCS CPD is structured as an eLearning-based assessment with multiple-choice questions. Unlike the previous system, there is no pass or fail outcome for these questions. Instead, participants receive instant feedback on incorrect answers, making the learning process more engaging and informative.
Key aspects of the new system include:
Five Modular Courses: The CPD is divided into five modules, tailored to the categories listed on the back of a participant’s CPCS card. This ensures that individuals only need to complete the modules relevant to their specific qualifications.
Flexible Learning: Each module takes approximately 30-40 minutes to complete, with no time restrictions. Participants can complete the modules at their convenience, using laptops, smartphones, or tablets. Moreover, they can start and stop the course as needed, allowing them to learn at their own pace.
Access and Support: The course is available exclusively in English, and each participant will need their own email address to register. For those requiring additional support, the CPD includes a voiceover feature, and participants may have someone assist them, provided they answer the questions independently.
No Test Centres Required: The CPD can be completed entirely online, eliminating the need for visits to test centres. Employers can facilitate payment for the CPD on behalf of their employees through the NOCN hub.
Key Points to Remember
No More Category-Specific Tests: The previous system of specific Renewal Tests per category has been replaced. All relevant aspects are now covered across the five CPD modules.
Record Keeping: Results from the CPD are automatically recorded in the participant’s NOCN account and will appear on the NOCN card checker within 24-48 hours.
Renewal and Validity: The CPD is valid for two years, consistent with the previous Renewal Test timeline. The practical assessments and OSATs (On-Site Assessment and Training) remain valid as alternatives to a logbook, and the relevant Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Touch Screen Test is still required.
Transition from Previous System: Any previously purchased tests or credits from Pearson Vue can be transferred to the new system, ensuring that no investment is lost during this transition.
In Summary
Instead of delegates doing a renewal TST they now need to do a CPD (module specific), it can be done at home on a laptop, or smartphone, eliminating the need to go to a Pearson’s centre.
A HSE test still needs to be done for a renewal and can be done through CPCS, Pearson centres or our Leeds centre.
